Tasting Notes
A deep coloured, wooded Shiraz/Viognier blend with a dark plum, spice and chocolate nose. On the palate soft tannins and ripe, dark, sweet fruit notes are balanced by the luscious and refreshing floral overtones. The well integrated fruit, tannin and wood combination gives a long, lingering and juicy aftertaste.
Vinification Details.
Berry selection before fermentation begins. Fermentation in small tanks and the skins pushed through by hand. Pressing of the skins starts when the tannin/fruit balance is optimal followed by malolactic fermentation in French and American oak barrels. Ageing in barrel for approximately 10 months.
Producer Information
SAAM is Afrikaans for 'together'. The name captures the true essence of the team and their attitude towards viticulture at Eensaamheid Farm. Located at the foot of Perdeberg Mountain range, SAAM Mountain Vineyards is a new South African venture that unites winemaking and farming. The area is known locally as the Mountain of Horses after the wild mountain zebra, the Quagga, used to roam there. SAAM Mountain Vineyards forms under a group of 40 South African wine growers, spanning the premium growing areas from Paarl to the Durbanville Hills. The vineyards produce, on average, less than 7 tonnes per hectare - around half the average yields of other wineries of this scale, ensuring that quality of fruit and intensity of flavour is naturally at the heart of SAAM Mountain's wines.
Regional info.
Eensaamheid, the home of SAAM Mountain Vineyards is located at the foot of Perdeberg Mountain in the heart of Paarl. The area is known locally as the Mountain of Horses after the wild mountain zebra, the Quagga, which used to roam there. The vineyards span the premium growing areas from Paarl to the Durbanville Hills.
About 50 km from Cape Town, Paarl is situated beneath a large granite outcrop formed by three rounded domes, the prominent one named Paarl (which means pearl) rock. This scenic town is home to the KWV and the venue for the world-renowned Nederburg Auction. The summers are long and warm, and rainfall enough to make irrigation advantageous only in exceptional circumstances. A large variety of grapes are grown in Paarl, of which Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc have the best potential.
The Paarl district includes the wards of Wellington, a burgeoning wine area which is producing some promising wines; Simonsberg-Paarl, on the prime foothills of the Simonsberg; and Voor Paardeberg. Some of the Wellington wineries stretch over alluvial terraces towards Swartland's rolling hills and wheat fields, while others are found in the foothills of the towering Hawequa mountains, where folds and valleys create unique mesoclimates. Wellington, which supplies over 90% of the South African wine industry with cuttings, has some 30 grapevine nurseries, situated here due to the appropriate soils and warm summers. In winter, snow sometimes covers the mountain tops and night temperatures are generally cooler than at the coast some 60 km away.
