Tasting Notes
A thoroughly modern take on a classic blend of Portuguese grapes with rich, damson flavours but very clean lines and great structure.
Vinification Details.
A small part of the grapes from the old vineyards were foot trodden & fermented in lagares for the same period. All wines were fermented under controlled temperature varying between 26-28 ºC. 85% aged for 17 months in stainless steel tanks. The remaining 15% aged in French Oak barrels for 12 months.
Producer Information
This eighteenth century Douro wine estate is actually one of the most modern-looking in Portugal. Although the team uses the traditional panoply of indigenous grapes, their methods are bang up to date and the results nothing short of sensational. Unusually for the region, Quinta do Vallado's priority is making table wines rather than Port, although their 10 year old Tawny is a superb partner for everything from ripe Stilton to ginger cake. The success of this approach has been borne out by the spicy, rich Tinto Reserva walking off with a host of trophies in its last two vintages at both the IWC and Decanter awards.
Regional info.
The grapes from the younger vineyards (8 to 12 year old) contributed with 70% of the final blend. The remaining 30% came from the very old parts of the vineyards (over 70 year old).
