Tasting Notes
Straw yellow with greenish highlights; subtle and delicate; characteristically round palate, with a hint of bitter almonds and slightly lower acidity than the other wines in the range.
Vinification Details.
The whole berries were pressed gently in a pneumatic press. After a first racking, the must was transferred to temperature-controlled fermentation vats. The wine stayed on the lees for at least eight months before bottling, ten to eleven months after the harvest.
Producer Information
Fruili is one of the wine world's best kept secrets - but not for long. Gianni Menotti and his team at Villa Russiz cleaned up again in the bible of Italian wine, the Gambero Rosso, in 2006 and the fame of these intense, vibrant wines is spreading. Even more importantly, it is a charitable organisation with the profits going to supporting the children's orphanage on the estate built by the aristocratic founders. The feel-good factor in knowing that you are doing some good in the world by drinking a Villa Russiz wine is only enhanced by the quality of the juice. Classic Italian grapes like Pinot Grigio and Tocai Fruliano thrive here but there are also fantastic Alpine versions of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot that shine with a rarely found intensity of fruit and crisply pressed structure.
Regional info.
Collio benefits from an extraordinary microclimate with cool winds of the Giulian Alps & warm currents from the Adriatic. The vines, situated on the hillsides around the estate headquarters, are mainly south-facing, on marly soil.
