Tasting Notes
Made from 100% selected Sangiovese clones, Rosso di Montalcino is considered Brunello's younger sibling.
It is a classic, savoury style that also happens to be a terrific value. Complex nose with notes of liquorice and plum jam, as well as a delicate hint of vanilla. The structure is full, soft and powerful; excellent and persistent finish.
Vinification Details.
Fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 7-10 days. It is then aged in a mixture of 50% french oak barrels and 50% slovenian oak barrels for 12 months, followed by an additional 6 months in bottle before release.
Producer Information
Castello Banfi is quite special in all honesty. John and Harry Mariani, both from America, decided to purchase this 7,100 acre estate located in the Brunello region of Tuscany in 1978. They did so, and sparked a renaissance in Italian Wine making. Castello Banfi were the first winery to be internationally recognised for exceptional environmental, ethical and social responsibility. Particularly forward-thinking and modern - they have played an execeptional role in research on the Sangiovese vine, focusing on producing more consistent and excellent Brunello di Montalcino through to organic procedures. Castello Banfi have certainly played their part in helping to heighten the quality of Montalcino. Their signature wines are well worth a go - single vineyard Reserve Poggio all'Oro and unfiltered cru Poggio alle Mura Brunellos, as well as three proprietary cuvees, Excelsus, Summus and Cum Laude. Other singlevineyard bottlings include Tavernelle Cabernet Sauvignon, Colvecchio Syrah and San Angelo Pinot Grigio.
Regional info.
Castello Banfi is a family-owned vineyard estate and winery in the Brunello region of Tuscany. Together with its sister estates in Piedmont, Vigne Regali and Principessa Gavi, it has become recognized the world over for its dedication to excellence and sparking a renaissance in the art of Italian winemaking.
Built on a ridge of more than 500 meters, Montalcino dominates the valleys of the Orcia, Arbia and Ombrone. Already inhabited in the Etruscan and Roman periods, the town is enclosed by walls with six gates and 19 towers, most of which are still visible. The fortress erected in the 14th century to protect the town is still entirely intact.
Brunello is not Montalcino's sole entry in the field of premium wines. Previously appreciated and widely known under various denominations, the Rosso di Montalcino acquired a precise identity and official recognition with the issuance of the Denominazione di Origine Controllata in 1983. The community can now boast of having three denominations of origin: Brunello, which requires extended aging; Rosso di Montalcino, a younger wine that combines a special vivacity and freshness with a superb structure, and the Moscadello di Montalcino, which is sweetish and fizzy.
