Idyllic Italian Wines

Wines from Italy are unique in many ways. Italian wines encompass a huge range of wines - from grape varieties, tastes and flavours to the terroir itself.

Basilicata in the south has only two DOC's, one being Aglianico del Vulture - one of South Italy's finest red wines. The volcanic soil lends it it's unique and complex flavours. Highly recommended from Basilicata is the Aglianico del Vulture Gudarra 2006. Recent reviews from Antonio Galloni's Italian Wine Specialist in the The Wine Advocate scoring a great 91 points maintains that this is has "layers of complexity. Everything comes together beautifully here". This Aglianico is the perfect accompaniment with Lasagna's and other meat dishes. Another juicy red from Basilicata is the Syrah Armille, also rated 92 points from The Wine Advocate, a "plump, juicy Syrah that is simply terrific'.

Looking for a zesty, light and fruity white wine then Italian whites are an ideal starting point. Fruili, in north Italy is home to fine and zesty white wines and Villa Russiz produces fantastic, top quality Sauvignon Blanc and others.

With great choices of white and red wines for those Summer nights, try something from Italy, perhaps a little off the beaten track and you will be pleasantly surprised.
