Vega Sicilia
The legendary Vega Sicilia; described by Michael Broadbent as 'the Lafite of Spain', dates back to 1864 when Bordeaux vine cuttings were brought to Spain for the first time. Leading the range is the Unico; which is always of Gran Reserva quality. There is also a fascinating non-vintage blend named Reserva Especial, and a second wine Valbueno 5.
The vineyards, which are planted with 60% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and the remaining Malbec, consist of extremely old vines ... for the Unico they are over 50 yrs old with some reaching 80 yrs! The process of making wine at Spain's 'first growth' winery is famously meticulous, yields are low and the ageing period is long. The Tempranillo; which forms the base of all the wines is particularly resistant to oxidation. Seven years aging in wood serves to soften and add complexity to the wine. The Valbuena is released after 5 years, whereas the Unico is always between 10-25 yrs old before release.
These wines are truly remarkable with enormous complexity and richness. The soft velvety texture, and mature flavours of black fruit and leather are absolutely unique. If this jewel of the Duero is missing from your cellar then it's time to make amends!
