Armand Rousseau

Domaine Armand Rousseau is exemplary of Burgundy tradition honed down to a fine art. Although named after his father, the domaine has been run superbly by Charles Rousseau since 1959. The wines are unquestionably one of the finest in the Cotes de Nuits; Rousseau's land holdings includes nearly 8 ha of Grands Crus and 3.5 ha of Premiers Crus. Since 1959 he has added to his inheritance: with plots in Clos St Jacques, Clos des Ruchottes, Clos de Beze and Chambertin. All together this is one of the most impressive portfolios in Burgundy.

However, whilst quality land may be a desirable prerequisite, it does not, by itself guarantee fine wine. Charles Rousseau's criteria is clear: fine land plus old vines plus low yields. The Pinot Noir vines are kept for as long as they are remotely productive.

Rousseau is not a domaine to be described in terms of techniques, but better thought of as an estate where the wines are made by care and by feeling. Although technique is not lacking, Charles and his son Eric prefer to trust their winemaking instincts.
