Petrus
Petrus, although unclassified, is probably the rarest and highly rated wine in the world. It ranks alongside the Bordeaux First Growths and is made almost entirely from the Merlot grape (95%). The estate itself is tiny; the chateau is modest, and there are only 11 hectares of vines, which are located within the Pomerol appellation. This explains its rarity and consequent high price, furthermore the yield is among the lowest in Bordeaux; some years eliminating up to 50% of the crop in order increase fruit concentration.
The name Petrus is derived from St Peter; who is depicted on the label holding the keys to the property. The wine is completely distinctive from those of surrounding properties; it has an unctuous, almost chewy quality of richness and power in common with them, but also an exceptional depth of colour and clearer definition of flavour. Everything about Petrus is small-scale, except for its wine and its reputation!
