Mas De Daumas Gassac

Mas de Daumas Gassac was established in the 1970s when Aime Guibert purchased an abandoned farmhouse in the Languedoc region of Southern France. It was previously owned by the Daumas family, located in a valley shaped by the flow of the river Gassac. At first Aime had no intention of making wine, however he recognised, with the help of oenologist Professor Henri Enjalbert that the combination of the red glacial soils together with the altitude and the nocturnal currents of cool air made this an ideal spot for viticulture.

The first red vintage was 1978 and the first white 1986. The wine has since come to be described as the 'Grand Cru of the Languedoc'. Indeed the estate turns out excellent wines and they are made in the Bordeaux style, based on Cabernet Sauvignon, with the necessary structure and substance for a prolonged period of ageing in the cellar. The 'grand vin' is classified as Vin de Pays de l'Herault and typically needs a decade or more in bottle. There is also a white; a blend of 30% each of Chardonnay, Viognier and Petit Manseng, with other varieties making up the remainder.

Today there are over 50 hectares planted, predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, but also with a huge range of varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Chardonnay, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Petit Manseng, Marsanne, Roussanne, Sercial and Muscat! Robert Parker comments that the Daumas Gassac domaine produces 'the most wonderful wines from the region'.
