Chateau Leoville Las Cases
Deuxieme Cru Classe Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases is what remains of the original Leoville estate; after parts were bought by the Barton family to create Leoville-Barton and Langoa-Barton. In the Leoville order, Las-Cases is the most impressive, the first and most tangible challenger to the first growths; and thus the prime example of a 'Super Second'.
It is also by far the largest, not just in St-Julien but in the whole of the Medoc. The huge 97 hectares produce wines that are known for their exotic perfume and youthful aromatic richness. Why? Because the grape must is fermented at a lower temperature than on average. In truth, these wines are of First Growth quality in terms of finesse and elegance; combining power, concentration and balance. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend by 65%, with an average vine age of 30yrs old. Leoville-Las-Cases is also one of the first estates amongst the great Bordeaux to introduce a second wine; known as Clos du Marquis. This is a great wine to buy to drink straight-away, and not to be disregarded because of its 'second wine' status; rather this is a different cuvee, from a different vineyard, hence its ability to challenge many other chateaux of the Medoc.
