Chateau La Mission Haut Brion

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is located opposite Chateau Haut Brion in the Pessac Leognan appellation. The group of Haut Brion wine estates is certainly very confusing, including also Laville Haut Brion, Carmes Haut Brion and Larrivet Haut Brion which are unclassified. La Mission Haut Brion however is ranked as a cru classe de Graves and was previously owned in conjunction with La Tour Haut Brion in the early 1900s. The latter was discontinued in 2005.

The property was acquired by co-owner of Chateau Haut Brion Clarence Dillon in 1983; who has consolidated La Mission Haut-Brion's position in the very upper echelons of all Bordeaux chateaux. Over the last 20 years there has been considerable refurbishment; including the renovation of the chai and the installation of a new bottling line. Work culminated in 2007 including a new tasting room and cellars, at the cost of 5m euros!

The vines are 45% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc. There is also a second wine called La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion; which is made from the vineyards of La Tour Haut Brion. La Mission Haut Brion is certainly one of the leading estates in the appellation; offering wines which combine style, presence but also rich substance. It is also a favourite of many wine critics and other wine professionals.
