Chateau La Conseillante
Catherine Conseillan, originally a metal dealer from Libourne, established vineyards in Pomerol midway through the 18th Century. By 1756 she practiced active viticulture and the wine produced was christened La Conseillante. Conseillan took full control of the estate, thus securing its future as one of Pomerol's most important viticultural properties. We can assume she was also responsible for the construction of the chateau. There were changes of ownership after the estate's initial founding; today it is owned by the Nicolas family since 1874, assisted by manager Jean Michel Laporte.
The Conseillante vineyards lie on the very boundary between Pomerol and St Emilion, nearby neighbours include Chateau Cheval Blanc in St Emilion, and Pomerol thoroughbreds such as Vieux Chateau Certan, Petrus and Chateau L'Evangile. La Conseillante is without doubt a leading estate in Pomerol. The label is alluring and memorable to many and the estate evokes femininity on multiple levels; the Grand Vin is seductive and elegant in style with its blend of 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. A second wine, newly created in 2007, named Duo de Conseillante is excellent quality and offers good value for money!
