William Fevre

William Fevre is now 77, retired and living in 'La Maladiere' - the main mansion at Domaine Fevre. He made his mark in Chablis with his first harvest in 1959, and although Fevre sold his domaine in 1998, the wines have since retained their finesse and elegance.

Fevre was instrumental in building up Chablis' worldwide reputation in the late 50's, when he passionately believed that something great could be made out of the Chardonnay grapes and actively bought abandoned vineyards to replant them post-phyloxera - a plague which wiped out most European vineyards in the late 19th Century). He also instigated practices to combat frosts which limited productivity during particularly cold years.

The domaine is the single largest owner of Grand Cru vineyards, together with a good number of Premier Cru holdings and many hectares of straight Chablis. The style is traditional; with an abundance of freshness and acidity. With maturity the wines also show a honeyed complexity which is unrivalled by any other Chablis wine producer.
