Domaine Bohrmann

A small domaine that is owned and run by a Belgian family of Port lovers, this is one of our favourite Burgundian producers. Until the 2006 vintage the wines were sold under the Domaine des Forges label. From the 2007 vintage onwards that has changed to Domaine Bohrmann, the family name.

As well as this tiny Meursault-based operation, the family also own Quinta do Passadouro in Portugal's Douro Valley, which until recently supplied Dirk Niepoort with grapes for his flagship Redoma wine.

Back in the Cote d'Or, des Forges is run by the irrepressible Sofie Bohrmann with one eye on world domination. Having started with just a few acres of Bourgogne Blanc and Rouge, they then purchased the wonderful monopole Clos sous le Chateau in St Romain followed by parcels in Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault (the latter next door to vines owned by Comte-Lafon). They continue to search for parcels of prime vineyard land and there were whispers of some 1er Crus to come when we last visited.

Yields are kept deliberately low across the range (even their Aligote crops at less than 35ha/hl) and the Bohrmanns are often the last to harvest in St Romain as they seek greater ripeness in their wines. The 1ha Clos sous le Chateau vineyard is impeccably kept - we like the rumour that the previous owner spent as much time there as possible to avoid his wife - and the 2006 vintage an excellent example with superb balance between fruit, oak and acidity.
