Conterno

Conterno is perhaps Barolo's premier winemaking dynasty. Giacomo Conterno was one of the stalwarts of the region. The business was passed to his son Giovanni; who for 45 years, until his death in 2004, forged a reputation as the greatest of all Barolo producers, irrespective of style. His brother Aldo struck out on his own in 1969 to produce wine under his Aldo Conterno label, and has also been very successful. Both are among the finest examples of the Nebbiolo grape. Giacomo Conterno is today run by Roberto Conterno (son of Giovanni); who stresses the importance of organic viticulture especially in the early years of the vines' growth. The estate is most renowned for its great Barolos Cascina Francia and Monfortino Riserva; these wines are the quintessence of 'traditional' Barolo: rich, powerful, massively structured, and capable of long development in bottle. There is also a partnership with fellow winery Fantino dedicated to producing more modern styled Barolos.
