Chateau de la Maltroye
Built in the 18th Century; the Chateau de la Maltroye is a wonderfully restored bourgeois house situated in Chassagne Montrachet. The only parallels in Burgundy to a house of such grandeur, which is immaculately and artistically presented, would be the 'statement' headquarters of Jadot or Bouchard. The current owner is Jean-Pierre Cornut, who runs the domaine with his son Jean Pierre. The domaine covers around 15 hectares; of which 40% of the vines are red Pinot Noir and the rest mostly Chardonnay. Each year there is enough for two barrels only of Batard Montrachet Grand Cru whilst there are 10 different Premier Crus whites; including La Dent de Chien, La Romanee, Grand Ruchottes, Maltroie Cretes, Clos de la Maltroye (red and white), Macharelle, Chevenottes and Baudine. The top wines are well-oaked, usually 100% for the Batard and sometimes also for La Dent de Chien and La Romanee. This is not the strong 'toasty' type of oak, rather the body-building, smoothing of edges type of wood. These are wines of great depth from a traditional domaine which produces a large range of wines that are never short of quality.
