Forman

Ric Forman is something of an old timer in Napa terms, with 35 vintages under his belt, more than 25 of them at his eponymous winery perched on a ridge at the base of Howell Mountain. Ric's inspiration has always been Bordeaux and his winemaking takes a more European approach than many Napa wineries. Effectively a one-man-winery, he still prunes the vines, picks the grapes and racks the barrels all by hand.

He is one of the last remaining old-school perfectionists in the valley - as Robert Parker says, ''His goal is to produce a Californian version of Haut-Brion or Ausone, or even better a combination of those two renowned Bordeaux chateaux.''
