Lightweight Glass, Heavyweight Benefits - 09/09/2008
The Vivid Team is proud to announce that the UK lightweight bottling project is now fully operational. All our UK bottled wines are now going into lighter weight glass, providing a huge saving for the environment. Belinda, our Technical Manager has tested and approved two bottles, weighing in at a lean 404g and a featherweight 356g, which represent a glass saving of 12% and 23% respectively per bottle. Our previous bottles tipped the scales at a hefty 460g, so the new initiative will give us a potential glass saving of 195,515kg this year, or the equivalent of 549,201 fewer bottles!
On top of the 195 tonnes of glass saved, we will be reducing our CO2 emissions by 621 tonnes as follows:
Packaging savings: 504 tonnes of CO2 - Less glass means less material and energy used in bottle production and this equates to a large reduction in emissions.
Transport savings: 116 tonnes of CO2 - Lighter bottles mean less energy used to transport them. This is based on the average transport distance by lorry from the bottle maker in the UK to the distribution centre.
Saving 621 tonnes of CO2 emissions is equivalent to taking 196 cars off the road!
The back labels of these bottles will include a Vivid logo and statement ("this lightweight bottle saved 23% on glass").
