Oz and James go to Delicato and Calera - 31/10/2007

Bibendumites sat nearer the edge of the sofa than usual last night as Oz Clarke and James May visited two of our favourite California producers.

First stop was Delicato, and the San Bernabe Vineyard, 'the world's largest' according to its owners, which is so big it has different microclimates at each end and an airstrip in the middle of it. And a lake, where our heroes went fishing - really just an excuse to taste lots of Delicato.

Next, Oz and James went to meet Josh Jensen at Calera, producer of 'one of the most compelling Pinot Noir specialists on Planet Earth' according to Robert Parker .Josh explained patiently how he had sought out the soil types most similar to Burgundy for planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and how the past 30 years had been spent struggling to produce the perfect expressions of those grapes from his various vineyards.
