Britain's first ever Sommelier Wine Awards 2007 - 27/07/2007
Four Bibendum wines battled their way onto the Sommelier Wine Award's 2007 shiny Gold List.
The wines entered in this competition are aimed at the on-trade and judged by the on-trade- nothing quite like logic to yield results!
Casa de la Ermita Crianza 2003 was placed on the Gold List and also a winner of the 'By the Glass' category after an expert food and wine matching session. The verdict: "The wine blossoms with the lamb- it's all cream, herbs and liquorice, but it lets the lamb speak for itself as well."
More praise for the lamb/Casa de la Ermita combo: "This is the Holy Grail of food-matching. The wine and food both taste better together than they did apart."
Mitchelton Crescent Shiraz/Mourvedre/Grenache 2003 was gold listed, as was fellow Oceanian Huia's Sauvignon Blanc 2006, in the Varietal Classic category, where it brought "plenty of the signature flavours of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to the table, but added something else besides: a certain elegance."
In the Spain and Portugal category Jean Leon's Pago Vinya Gigi Chardonnay 2004 found glory on the Gold List too.The judges reasoning: "an excellent wine of real pedigree" which had "no shortage of both poise and attitude." Many more of our Bibendum wines were short listed too.
Judges including wine consultant Peter McCombie MW, Gearoid Devaney from Tom Aikens, and Christine Parkinson from Hakkasan, looked for food-friendliness, versatility, character and value for money in the entrants.
