Burgundy 2007 is GO! - 15/01/2009
They came, they saw, they tasted...a lot! Over 200 thirsty Pinot-philes hit RIBA last night for the Bibendum Burgundy Tasting. We showed over 80 wines from 23 growers and the buzz around the room was the wines are delicious. The whites are classic, minerally elegant Burgundies with great terroir expression and the reds are forward and friendly with a real sweetspot of red berry fruit. You can listen to what Nicolas Rossignol thought of it all on the blog.
Picking our favourites was a tough job but here's Team Bibendum's Top 5 wines from last night:
Bourgogne Blanc Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot (12 x 75cl) - £120 In Bond
A brilliant bargain white that will be arriving in the UK very shortly and is ready to drink now. A real insider's wine, it is lighter and fresher than the 2006 with easy, floral fruit and a thirst quenching finish.
St-Aubin 1er Cru en Remilly Domaine Marc Colin 2007 (12 x 75cl) - £180 In Bond
This might just have been the best value white at RIBA - top notch stuff from this unsung appellation: toasty oak, ripe peachy fruit, zesty lemon on the finish and lovely minerality.
Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds Domaine Nicolas Rossignol 2007 (12 x 75cl) - £360 In Bond
Nicolas' wines enjoyed an excellent debut at our tasting and this was our pick of the three. Delicate berry fruits on the nose followed by a firm palate with lots of structure. There is a bite of tannin and plenty of acidity but more than enough fruit to balance it out.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras Pascal Lachaux 2007 (6 x 75cl) - £245 In Bond
We didn't get to taste this in Burgundy in November but loved it last night. Fresh and ripe with delicious, deep cherry fruit and super fine tannins.
Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru Domaine Maume 2007 (12 x 75cl) - £620 In Bond
We were very impressed by our barrel tasting of this wine but it exceeded all our expectations last night. Fantastic perfumed nose, subtle berry fruit a very long finish. Bertrand Maume makes wonderful, natural wines and this will age superbly.
